Standing together to oppose Islamophobia

Standing together to oppose Islamophobia and racism in Cambridge and beyond

We are appalled by the hate messages which have recently circulated online and have been posted as letters to Muslim homes in some areas of the UK. This vile racism has no place in our communities and in our universities. We note that visibly Muslim women are particular targets of such hate campaigns and are disproportionately likely to face attacks and abuse in the street.

The growth in Islamophobia is part of a wider pattern of rising racism, and we note with alarm recent racist incidents at Nottingham Trent and Exeter universities where BME students were abused in student halls and online.

It is time to take a stand. We pledge to work together to root out Islamophobia, to oppose racism in all its forms and to defend our vibrant multicultural society. We won’t let the racists divide us!

This statement will be handed in at Mawson Road mosque on 3 April – please see this Facebook event for details. A copy will also be sent to the local media and signatures may be circulated online.
