Cambridge University UCU committee sends a message of solidarity to students and staff in many Indian universities who are engaged in protests against the discriminatory Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). We are appalled at the level of violence used by the Indian authorities to suppress student protests, particularly at Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University, where credible media reports document riot police and paramilitaries storming campus, brutally beating protesters and assaulting women.

The CAA offers an accelerated path to citizenship for Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Parsi and Christian refugees but not to Muslims. The proposed NRC will perform a 'citizenship audit', requiring people to provide documentary proof of their citizenship, unbearably burdening India’s poorest and most marginalised communities and paving the way for the mass exclusion of Muslims from citizenship. We note with concern that the CAA has been described by the United Nations as fundamentally discriminatory towards Muslims, and share the fears of many students and academic colleagues in India. Legal scholars have pointed out that the CAA violates the secular and plural spirit of the Constitution of the Republic of India which guarantees equality of treatment.

We call for an immediate end to this repression and demand that the Indian government respects the constitutionally-enshrined rights of its citizens to dissent and protest. We urge university workers and students across the UK to show their solidarity for our colleagues in India who are risking injury and arrest by protesting against these unjust laws.

We ask the UK government to join the United Nations in condemning the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act and demand that it be rescinded. ... See MoreSee Less
